"Val McDermid’s 25th novel is stunningly good, but it comes with a health warning. It is truly disturbing. Not in the sense of too many detailed descriptions of violence or post mortem examinations, but in what she does in entering the mind of a wholly evil, exceptionally inventive serial killer of teenage girls."

"McDermid handles the multiple viewpoints of this complex narrative with assurance. She flicks from crisis to crisis, constantly misdirecting her readers. She is brilliant at sensational set-pieces … If there's a weakness in the book's construction, it's that the tattoo murderer remains so much on the sidelines; at times it's almost as if the subplot has wandered in from a different novel."

"McDermid has always been expert at seamlessly shifting viewpoints between killers and cops, but in one way her writing has changed: there is still plenty of gore but far less disgusting detail. Every drop of blood is relevant and necessary for the story. Even the descriptions are quite restrained, and don’t gratuitously dwell on the intricacies of sadistic murder. It doesn’t diminish the book’s fascination, but did make it one I was glad to have picked up.

"Good to see McDermid still at the very top of her game after a quarter of a century of scaring the hell out of us."

"… a book with a choppy feel, rather than a steady build of tension … However, McDermid's brisk efficiency as a writer will continue to endear her to genre devotees; and the many fans of Tony Hill will doubtless enjoy his oddball company enough to forgive this book its flaws."
