The Literary Review
Jessica Mann
"Nearly every one of Mark Billingham’s ten volumes so far has been a prize winner or nominee. This one, like its predecessors, is carefully researched and has scrupulously placed clues and credible characters. A sombre, thought-provoking police procedural."

"A clever writer, Billingham ratchets up the tension and sustains it brilliantly throughout the book"

"There is a good mix of action and detection, making the book both chilling and clever, the perfect combination for a crime novel. I'm sure it makes for great television too, but my only gripe with the written version is the macho habit of summing up a dilemma in a short staccato sentence given a paragraph of its own ... it begins to make the protagonist sound like a cross between Jeremy Clarkson and Ross Kemp."

"Taut and tense, with an unusually sympathetic hostage-taker."
