The New York Times

Janet Maslin

"Because The Affair begins exactly four and a half years before the Sept. 11 attacks, Mr. Child also incorporates memories of a less alert Army and a world with less stringent security rules. But this book is really about the man himself, and it presents his most colorful appearance in a long time. It establishes Reacher’s idealistic but vengeful personality and lays out the rules by which he lives."

The Sunday Times

John Dugdale

"Here he is more sleuth than solo vigilante as he investigates a young woman’s death (is a local army base involved?). Relatively mundane, un-Reacherish activities such as shopping and eating are recorded, and there’s even the titular affair with a female sheriff. It’s deftly done, but something of a gamble. Devotees no more want a humanised Reacher, you suspect, than Ruth Rendell fans want a gun-toting Wexford."

The Mail on Sunday

Craig Brown

"Lee Child is as reliable with his formula as Agatha Christie was with hers. In fact, the two authors have much in common. In many ways, Jack Reacher is just Miss Marple with a hairy chest."
