"Evans has gone the Marvel route before, playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in a pair of "Fantastic Four" movies. But as Steve Rogers, a weak young man who gets turned into the husky Captain America by a dose of Super-Soldier Serum, this part brings out an appealing earnestness and humility in the actor that is certainly not business as usual in the comic book superhero genre."

"Solid, efficient, often anachronistic: Captain America is earthbound when it needs to soar."

"Respect is due to Joe Johnston and his screenwriters for not only fashioning a nifty, highly entertaining slice of pulpy comic-book action, but for making this most divisive of costumed crusaders universally relatable."

"Charming, handsome and full of pep – all 70 year-old Cap lacks is a knockout blow. Still, Johnston should be saluted for old-fashioned heart in a cynical age, while Marvel should be confined to barracks for cynical marketing."

"Alas, the 3D transfer adds little except murk, so that you leave the film feeling as though you've been looking at some dimly lit cave art (though not as good, of course). The other problem with Captain America is that it's without irony and genuinely patriotic — and has been much relished for that in the States, where it's been a big hit."

"The movie cleverly spins a meta-fictional "origin" myth for Captain America: explaining that he was in fact a propagandist comic-book superhero before becoming a real one. The final scene of the film, and Captain America's very last line, are rather brilliant — though admittedly less brilliant if their sole purpose is to set up sequels."

"The good news about Captain America: The First Avenger is that it's at least half of a pretty enjoyable movie. That would be the first half … Too bad, then, that the film's latter stages fall back so unthinkingly on the platitudes of the action adventure movie."

"As formulaic as it is, it's one of the more joyful examples of the genre, largely because it's a period piece ... Even when you're watching a superhero movie, though, you've got to believe at some point that the man in tights might be in danger, and Captain America lacks that essential frisson. The peppy, nostalgic fun is appropriate as long as Evans is making the transition from man to superman, but once he's on the battlefield, you'd think the film might get a tad more nerve-racking. It doesn't."

"The love story part is too clumsily predictable to be satisfying, even if Rosario Dawson, as a kind veterinarian, and the likable Mr. James make an appealing couple. I give them a 6, and the film a 4. (Sorry, girls.) My favorite character? Well, that’s just the problem."

"… a cataclysm of ineptitude … it’s hard to think of a single positive thing to say about Captain America other than that you’ve got a full 12 months before he comes round again."
