"Tis is a show that plugs directly into the audience’s imagination. A parrot is conjured out of a feather duster, scary cormorants are suggested by flapping black plastic bin-bags, and a couple of ribbons create the rippling waters of the lake. Helen Edmundson’s adaptation perfectly captures the period flavour, while the adult actors playing the children give fresh, strongly characterised performances that navigate a safe passage between the twee and cute"

"A thoroughly entertaining, beautifully balanced show for all ages: sincere but not strait-laced, playful but not facetious. Maybe 85 million readers aren’t wrong after all."

"In this reimagining it seems a rich and appealing fantasy, which pays aptly Christmasy homage to the power of the imagination. "

"This is a joyous production that works on liberating the inner child and amplifies that by having adults play the children, so that we see their future selves peeping through. And in one moving moment, the staging offers a glimpse of their wartime experiences to come, which makes their childhood freedom seem all the more precious."

"While mining the charm of an 80-year-old story, it takes a very modern theatrical approach ... It has immediacy, and a ramshackle liveliness that is enormously appealing."

"The brilliance of this is that the Lake District landscape emerges seamlessly from the make-do-and-mend stage-scape, and Ransome’s vision of idyllic England is brought to vivid life."

"A superlative ensemble bring the families to life, using simple yet effective physical theatre. Chief among these performers are Akiya Henry as the feisty Titty, who opens the tale as an old woman, looking back on her childhood and Stewart Wright, simply wonderful as a burly and bearded seven-year-old Roger.
