“The supporting cast are excellent. Todd Carty as Arthur’s servant Patsy provides an unexpectedly tender turn and proves he has a more than serviceable voice - which is perhaps all that is required in what is one of the West End’s smaller stages where the cartoony backdrops lend a feel of pantoish fun. But what’s wrong with that? After all, what do you expect? The Spanish Inquisition?”

“So once this company start to make the material their own, once Kit Orton’s Knight of Ni starts cracking up Brigstocke and Todd Carty (as the King’s horse, Patsy), once Rob Delaney’s Sir Robin finds his voice on You Won’t Succeed in Showbiz, once Robin Armstrong has brought vim to his stupid guard, once they’ve found the Grail — we are sometimes in danger of forgetting about the Grail, it has to be said — and had a singalong of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, it’s become not just a knock-off but an entity in itself. And we’ve had a good evening.”

“Marcus Brigstocke – a sharp comedian in his own right – plays Arthur. New to the part, he has a faintly Cleesian presence and looks as if he is humouring the material with the fixed smile (and frown) of someone minding a tedious child. He wears designer specs beneath his crown, but needs to visit an optician as they keep sliding down his nose, owing to all that cantering he has to do with Patsy. At least the coconuts are an improvement on the old chestnuts on display elsewhere in the show.”
