The Observer

"A couple of years ago the Guardian published transcripts of telephone calls made by members of the public to the emergency services. Carrie Cracknell has used some of these to make a radiant piece of theatre. Its part of her project as joint artistic director (with Natalie Abrahami) of the Gate to use dance to tell stories. In Breathing Irregular, four exceptional performers re-create these moments. The text is spare, with the jerky vivacity of real speech."

"Breathing Irregular rarely gripped me, and the ending is more ambiguous than necessary, but the performance is delivered with an artful power."

The Evening Standard

Sarah Frater

"Breathing Irregular is more a recital than a piece of theatre… In more adept hands, the dance would resolve the stories, or tell you how they end, or reveal the lies their tellers told. Breathing Irregular has the physical appeal of dance but not the metaphysical insights choreography provides."

"It's an intense but not entirely heart-stopping show, and sometimes strangely lacking in urgency. I don't quite know what it is for, although it will surely encourage us all to sign up to that first-aid course we never got round to. Despite a terrific quartet of performers, too often the work is merely illustrative of the transcripts."
